Australia has the Largest Carbon Footprint

The United States ranks in 2nd place, thanks to the increase from the Australians. Since 2008 we have been battling for first place with China, according to Wikipedia. Australia has plans to reduce their carbon emissions and they are the first nation to put a price tag on it. Overall, their goal is to reduce their carbon emissions by 80% no later than the year 2050 by starting with a $24 per ton of carbon dioxide tax which increases 2.5% each year until the year 2015. Then the tax will end and a trading scheme will be introduced. Additionally the carbon footprint reduction plan is supposed to raise $10 billion for energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. Rolling Stones Magazine did a great article outlining Australia’s plan. Click here for their story.

There is no clear or concise list of which companies are the biggest contributors globally, nationally or locally. There are people asking for disclosure. Organizations such as the United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment are looking to gain transparency so that there can be proper accountability and a plan put in place for reduction. So far, a few are willing, but most are not. For now. Nature.com has a good blog of information on some of the particulars. Carbon neutrality at this juncture seems like a pipe dream, yet it is one of the single most important goals for insuring a healthy future for our planet. The EPA has put together a plan for a 17% reduction in the United States by the year 2020. Latest reports from them show that they are on target. The good news is, as a nation we are moving in the right direction. The bad news is… it’s just not enough.
